Activity 4a:
Making Effective X-Y Scatter (Line), Pie and Bar Charts:  Part II

Please do the following at the beginning of every computer activity.

a. Open a new Word document.

b. Click on the Office Button in the upper left corner, then slide over "Save As".   Choose either "Word Document" to save your document as a Word 2007 document or "Word 97-2003 document" to save your document in an early version of Word.  If you are not sure which to choose, you should use "Word 97-2003 document".  Save the document to the desktop by setting the "Save in" textbox to "Desktop". (Saving to the desktop makes it easy to retrieve your work when you are finished.)  Your file name should be entitled something like "Group Activity 4".  Last, confirm the save as type in the last box.  (*.docx) is the suffix for a Word 2007 document.  (*.doc) is the suffix for early versions of Word.

Learning Goals For This Activity:

Problems:

  1. Open the Excel Worksheet on Big 10 Graduation Rates, BigTenGraduationRates.xls and review the graduation rates.  Construct two graphs--one which shows the overall graduation rate by school, and one which shows the male graduation rates for Black and White males by school.  Make sure to provide appropriate axes labeling, titles, and legends as required.

  2. Open the Excel Worksheet on Crime in Chicago 1997-2007, Crime in Chicago 1997-2007.xls and review the times series of violent and property crimes.  Construct a graph showing these two categories over the 1997 to 2007 timeframe.  You will have to transpose the data (put the years in rows as one column and create two more columns--to put the number of violent crimes and property crimes--this is most easily done using PASTE TRANSPOSE under PASTE SPECIAL & using a new worksheet).

  1. Use the data in the original worksheet Crime in Chicago 1997-2007.xls to create two charts showing the relative proportions of of Violent Crime categories and Property Crime categories for the year 1997.  Make sure the graphs are appropriately labeled.

  2. Use the same worksheet to construct a graph comparing levels of crime for the eight individual categories for the years 1997 and 2001.
